Chapter 3 Listening

Hellooo!:) My name is Liew Yi Ying, everyone call me yiying or yingying.

Since we have finished Chapter 3-Listening in Human Communication, it’s time to update our blog again;P

The first thing we have learned in this class is that listening and hearing have quite different meanings. Listening is the process of receiving, constructing meaning from and responding to spoken and/or non-verbal messages. Hearing is the physical sense of perceiving sound.

So next, this chapter has been separated into 3 parts:

(1) Listening stages/process

(2) Listening & culture

What do we learn in this part is that the different of cultural may influence listening. Language & speech, non-verbal behaviors, direct and indirect styles, balance of story versus evidence, credibility and feedback are the influences of listening. Even though people are from different backgrounds, an active listening is required.

(3) Listening effectively

As stressed throughout this chapter, listening is situational. There are 4 difference dimensions that make listening more effectively: Participatory & passive listening; Empathic & objective listening; Nonjudgmental & critical listening; Surface & depth listening. To improve our listening skills, we need to evaluate what kind of feedback is more appropriate to the speaker.

Alright, before I ended these posts, I would like to share a video clip that is about effective listening skills. And here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8zNx_IarUw
